King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma strove to reform religion, health care, education, and the economy. They made repeated requests pledging resources for the establishment of a mission of the Church of England in the Kingdom of Hawaii which had also been the wish of Kamehameha I. The first Anglican Bishop of Hawaii and other church missionaries arrived in October 1862. They established the church using prayer books translated by King Kamehameha IV, and opended schools for girls and boys including what would become 'Iolani School.
